Portrait Photography

What is Portrait Photography?

Portrait photography or portraiture in photography is a photograph of a person or group of people that captures the personality of the subject by using effective lighting, backdrops, and poses. A portrait picture might be artistic, or it might be clinical, like a school portrait.

Research

I googled how to take portrait photos, and got lots of information in return. There are lots of rules to follow and lots of tips to make your photos more interesting.

I want you to read through 3-5 of these top articles and compare the do's and don'ts. Come up with your own list of the top 5 do's and don'ts. You'll probably need to take some notes on it.

In your Canvas ePortfolio, add a heading at the top of the Photoshop page: Portrait Photography. Add your list below it.

Using the same links, what are some of the ways to make portraits more fun and interesting than a school photo?  Take notes.

Taking Photos

You'll need to find some willing participants. Your classmates, the seniors in the cafeteria with late arrival, some teachers, student aides, your family and friends are just a few ideas.

You'll need to consider lighting, backdrop, and how you want them posed for the photo.

Remember that it's better to take more shots than required so that you have choices when editing.

Graphic Design 2 - You'll need 10 distinctly different portraits to edit. You should use a minimum of 3 models.

Graphic Design 1 - You'll need 5 distinctly different portraits to edit. You should use a minimum of 3 models.

Create a folder in your One Drive - Portraits. Save your photos there to go through.

Editing

There are lots of methods for editing photos. You can experiment with the tried and true, or you can research and find some different methods. Refer back to the photo enhancement we did last year. It will help you to take notes on what tools you used on each photo. And remember, KEEP THE ORIGINAL so that you can compare it with the work you've done.

Putting it together

You'll use Adobe Spark to put these together, but instead of inserting a single photo, you'll insert a Photo Grid. Each time you insert a Photo Grid, you'll choose 2 photos - the original and the edited.  Please put the original photo on the left, edited photo on the right. Add captions below it that tell what tools you used to enhance it.

Turning it in...

You've already added your Top 5 Do's and Don'ts under the Portrait Photography heading.

Add the link to your Adobe Spark page, and use the "link to URL" button to add a functioning link.
