Green Screen

What is a Green Screen?

(in film and video techniques such as chromakey) a green (or blue background in front of which moving subjects are filmed and which allows a separately filmed background to be added to the final image.

Set Up

When we use the green screen, we are typically going to set up the lighting as well to ensure the best effects.

How to Light a Green Screen

After setting it up, we'll take some practice footage to make sure that you have the best possible lighting for it.

Chroma Key

You'll find it in the Effects > Video Effects > Keying

There are several different methods in this folder and it's good to try a few  to see the differences in them. But today you'll use the Luma Key and Ultra Key. The Ultra Key let's you sample the color of the green screen making it a little more specific. Choose 2 more different keying effects to sample.

You'll then adjust the settings in the Effect Controls. No two clips will have the same settings.

You'll need a large resolution photo to put in a lower level track so that you can see it through the Green Screen.

  1. Export it as H.264 > Match Source
  2. Upload it to your Youtube
  3. Embed in your ePortfolio with the 4 effects listed in the order you applied them.

Where in the World is...

You will need  to think of a specific place in history that you would like to witness or be a part of.  You'll need to be able to find a large resolution image or video to play in the background where you'll fit.

Choose your era/place in history first. Then search for video/image clips on Discovery Learning (through Classlink) or the Resources link on this site.

Look at the image/video to see what kind of shots you need to get of yourself. Do you need a closeup, mid shot, or something different for the clip?  You'll probably need more than 1 clip to download.

Write your script - you need to plan what you are going to say. You may use another student in your video as well.

Write your storyboard - you need to plan what you are going to say and at what time. If you are incorporating yourself into a video, you need to plan your lines in between what is already going on.

How long should it be?  Approximately two minutes. If you need a different time requirement, talk to me first before starting as it will affect your grade.

Film & Edit

You'll need to take turns filming, so make sure you have everything ready to go.

Though you'll be helping each other shoot your scenes, and act in each others videos, you are responsible for your own story and editing your own story.

Turning it in...

Upload the finished & exported video to your YouTube channel. You'll then embed the video below the Title and questions.

  1. Add the title of your challenge
  2. Then answer the following questions:
    1. Which type of keying effect(s) did you wind up using on the "where in the world is" project? Why did you choose it?
    2. What difficulties or challenges did you encounter with the green screen effects?
    3. List the order of the keying effects that you used in the green screen practice?
  3. Embed videos below the questions - Practice Green Screen then the Where in the World.
