8 Photoshop Color & Filters

Color Theory

Understanding how color is formed can help you use color more effectively in your designs. Anything that emits light uses additive color, while everything that reflects light uses subtractive color.  More than "how" is understanding the relationships between different colors. In the 18th century, the modern color wheel was developed to make it easy for us to do just that.

Color Wheel

Now that you've watched the videos in the previous stage, you should be ready to complete this worksheet showing what you know about Color.

Open the Color_Wheel_Assignment.PSD from the PS_Color folder in the Campus Share Drive. I'll demonstrate and explain the assignment in this video, but you'll complete it on your own. Make sure you save it as #_lastname_Color_Wheel_Assignment.PSD first, then when you finish completely, save it as a JPG to upload to your Canvas ePortfolio.

Filters Ball

You'll want to create a new folder called Filters Project inside your Photoshop folder to save all of the files for this assignment - there will be several to keep track of.

You'll need to get a camera and have someone take 4 "Close-up" shots of yourself, in 4 different poses. If you have 4 different Close-up photos on your phone that you can use, that is fine too. Just make sure that they are different!

  • School picture pose
  • Silly face pose
  • Angry face pose
  • Other options are okay too, but they need to be of your face.

You'll need to go through these 8 parts to complete the Photos Filter Ball.

Call me over to see your finished PSD files before you print.

ALWAYS save as a PSD first so that you can go back and edit it. #_lastname_Filters_Project_1 and #_lastname_Filters_Project_2.  Then, save them as JPG's to upload to your Canvas ePortfolio.

Create Your Online Avatar

Choose one of the forward facing photos that you applied color and filter to in the previous stage. Open it in Photoshop, make any adjustments you think are necessary. Resize it to 1.5 inches square. Then save it as a Photoshop file in your Photoshop folder: #_lastname_avatar.PSD. When you are completely finished, save it as a JPG.

Gravatar.com

Go to Gravatar and create your account. Use your LCISD email: username@students.lcisd.org, username & password.  You must type it correctly or it won't work.  Watch how I did mine.

If you created an account in my class last year, you should be able to log in to upload & select your new avatar. You will probably need to log in using your old password (lunch number), then go to Account Settings and change your password to your current one.

Upload your JPG image to complete your profile. When it asks you to give your avatar a rating, please choose Rated G for it to work properly.

Turning it in

Update Photoshop page of your Canvas ePortfolio with the following information and let me know when you have completed it so that I can check it for a grade. You can follow along with this video if you don't remember how to embed your images. New posts should be at the top.

  1. Title of the challenge
  2. Briefly define/explain how these tools & options work:
    1. What is the purpose of choosing a color scheme?
    2. Explain what complimentary colors are?
    3. Which 3 filters did you like the best?
  3. Insert the JPG image(s) that you created in this challenge (color wheel, avatar and filters ball -2)
