7 Photoshop Type Tools

They say a picture is worth 1000 words.

Sometimes a picture just isn't enough and you need to add text. Other times you may want to create cool text all by itself. In this challenge, you'll learn about...

  • Point Type
  • Area Type
  • Text Alignment
  • Setting Font, Style, Size & Color
  • Horizontal & Vertical Type Tool
  • Horizontal & Vertical Type Mask Tool
  • Character Panel
  • Options
  • Layer Style

Type Basics

Open a new Photoshop file, Letter size, Saved as #_lastname_type_basics.PSD.  Be sure to save as you go.

Follow along with these videos to learn about the basic Type Tools and options.

Save as a JPG when you have completed Type Basics.

Comic Strip

You'll find the PS_blank_comic_strips folder in the Campus Share Drive that has some blank comic strips in it. You will choose one comic strip and fill in the bubbles with type to tell the story.

You will need to use the Horizontal Type Tool to create an Area Type box that fits in the thought bubble. You'll adjust the font family & size as needed. Look at the character's faces and body language to determine what story you will tell.

Save your file as a Photoshop file so that it can be edited, and as a JPG when you are finished so that it can be uploaded to your Canvas ePortolio -  #_lastname_comic.PSD

  • Cool Text Effects

Sometimes you can make art of just text - add some layer styles and other effects to accomplish this. You will choose THREE from the list below to complete and add to your Canvas ePortfolio.  You'll save each one as a Photoshop file, and then a JPG when it's completed. The filename should be the name of the effect.
