Write your script
You and a partner will create a simple script, between 60-90 seconds, to carry on a conversation between yourselves. I'm not that interested in what you have to say - just that you have a back and forth conversation.
Filming
You'll film the conversation with a 2 cameras, over the shoulder. Each camera will be focused on a face so that you can see the person talking. When speaking, the actors should not be looking down at the script. Again, the camera needs to see the face and mouth moving.
Editing
You will edit the video first. Cut back and forth so that your video has the person who is speaking on camera. You need to focus on clean edits, don't cut away in the middle of a word or sentence. Once you have this complete, you should unlink the audio and delete it from the track.
Narrating
Each actor will need to narrate the opposite person's lines. This works best if the boy reads the girl part and vice versa. You'll need to make sure you enunciate the words properly. Time your narrating with the action of the speaking. You can try to narrate your entire part in one take and then edit after, or do each clip separately.

Holey Foley
You've had enough practice now to do a full scene, from scratch
Script & Storyboard
You need to create a short story (approximately 2 minutes) that will include:
- At least 6 Mid-Shots or Close Up shots suitable for synchronized dialogue replacement. *The person speaking must say more than 5 words for it to count as a dialogue shot. You can have more scenes, but at least 6 need to meet these requirements. **The shot must be from in front of the actor - no profile shots. ***Indicate which line of dialogue is being spoken in that scene.
- Each of your shots must clearly show actions that will be replaced with realistic sound effects created by you (doors shutting, water running, cup being set down, etc.) *Footsteps are tough **Sound effects should be listed on script and storyboard and labeled as F1, F2, F3, etc. ***You will create and record all of your sound effects in post-production.
- At least three BONUS sound effects - these can be unrealistic, but must have an obvious source (swish of a karate chop, cracking knuckles, etc.) *Bonus sound effects should be listed on the script and storyboard and labeled as B1, B2, B3, etc.
Filming
- No external microphone when filming
- Must use MS or CU for the scenes that contain dialogue so that the audience can see how well the dialogue replacement is synchronized
- Actions planned for sound effects should also be clearly visible in the video as the apparent source of the sound.
- Re-record all audio including dialogue, environmental noise (ambient) and sound effects with the external microphone
Editing (Post Production)
- Create a new folder on your desktop for all of your files in this project. You might want to create subfolders for sound fx, narration, clips, etc.
- Edit and trim the clips as necessary, arrange them on the timeline. Replay and rehearse the dialogue to mimic the timing and delivery of the original. Record the dialogue and sync it with the original.
- Actors CANNOT re-record their own dialogue!
- Once you finish narrating the dialogue, delete the original audio track.
- Use Foley to create and record sound effects. The sound effects must be synced with the specific action.
- Insert ambient noise and music
- Adjust audio levels so that the dialogue and sound effects are clearly heard. Ambient noise should be just loud enough to offset the unnatural effect created by deleting the original production sound.
- Export as H.264 > Match #_lastname_name of your story_foley
Turning it in...
You'll need to upload both of your videos (foley intro and story_foley) to your YouTube Channel.
- Put the Title of the Challenge
- Complete the following sentences:
- My best work on this project is…
- If I could change one aspect of my work on this project it would be…
- One thing I learned while working on this project was….
