Script Writing
A great video always starts with an intriguing script! It doesn't matter if it's tutorial, news story or a short film. The story is the focus.
- You need an idea.
- Write the outline, breaking the idea down into small points. Look at it in parts, and identify points or questions that will help your story.
- You need to identify:
- Overall purpose
- Intended audience
- Why should the audience care
- What should the audience take away from it
- Did I get my message across
- Write conversationally. Write as if you're talking to someone in front of you.
- Write to the video. Think of all of the visual elements you'll use and write your script so that you identify those elements.
- Talk to yourself as you write. Speak it out loud to see if what you've written flows with your voice and how you talk. Listen to inflections and emphasis on certain parts of a word or sentence. You may need to change it based on how you speak it.
- Keep it short, simple and direct. A long script = a long video. You want your viewers to stay engaged. Every word should serve a purpose.
- Tell a story. The best videos leave a lasting impression. Great writers convey this through emotion - laughing, crying, etc.
