Low Poly

You are going to create an illustration using the Low Poly method.

Simple geometric shapes placed side-by-side to create angular, often minimalist, compositions. The “poly” from low poly comes from the word “polygon,” which is merely a 2-dimensional shape made of straight lines and angles.

The use of low poly art comes from the early days of 3D animation. Mocking up 3D scenes using a low polygonal resolution helped to reduce render times, which greatly sped up the development process of video games and animated movies.

Visit this site to see some great examples of people, animals, characters and scenes using Low Poly.

Get started

You'll need to find a photo to use for this. It can be one you've taken yourself, or you can use the Creative Commons to find a photo of your liking.

The directions for doing the exercise are here.

Remember that smaller areas get smaller polygons, larger areas get larger polygons. Zoom in to get the smaller details.

Background

Yes, you need to include the background/setting in your illustration. Use the same method.

Add your signature to the lower right corner of the image.

Print!

Turning it in...

You'll need to export the Illustrator image as a JPG or PNG, named:  #_lastname_low-poly
