Illustrated Storybook

Pick a scene...

from one of your favorite books or fairy-tales. Imagine that you’ve been hired to illustrate the book (or parts of the book). You are the first person to illustrate the story, so your scene will be original.

Focus on a specific quote, conversation, or colorful narrative from the scene for this one illustration. You will creatively incorporate this into your illustration as well. You can illustrate a single page of the book, or an entire spread (left and right side).

Plan It Out

Sketch it out with pencil and paper before delving into Photoshop or Illustrator. You should have an idea of your layout and what elements & characters you need to draw before beginning. Use color, texture, value, space, balance, perspective & consistency.  Your sketch does not have to be elaborate drawings. But it does need to have all of your characters and elements in place. It should also have a designated space for the text you are adding.

Turn in for approval and for a minor grade.

Helpful Hints

  • Pay attention to the colors – they need to be "in gamut" otherwise it won’t print the color you intended
  • Use and name your layers
  • Use the folders/groups to organize your layers
  • You can draw characters in other files and then place them in the page
  • Use color, texture, value, space, balance, perspective & consistency.
  • Be creative and be original – don’t try to duplicate an illustration you’ve seen before
  • Save early, save often, and in your One Drive as #_lastname_illustrated_storybook
