What is Foley?
Foley is the process of creating sound effects live in the studio along to a prerecorded video. A variety of props are used to create or replace sounds that could not be properly captured on set.
Subway Commercial
You'll need to download this folder. Right click and "Extract All." Then rename and move the folder into your One Drive. Remember that you need to save your Premiere file into this folder as well.
Here is an example of what your finished video should look and sound like. Watch and listen carefully for where the voices and sound fx go.

The video clips are already placed on a Premiere Pro timeline - you'll find the Premiere file (for Premiere 2022 and 2023) in the Project Files folder.
You'll add the audio in the Sound Fx and Voices folder to complete this commercial. Remember that you are working to sync the lip movement and voices accurately as well as the sound fx in the proper places. It will require some trial and error to make it work.
Save early and often!
When you finish, make sure that your timeline shows all of the clips then use Snip & Sketch to create a screenshot of your timeline only.
When you finish, export your video as H264 > Match Bitrate. #_lastname_subway_foley
Turning it in...
You'll need to upload both of your videos (nursery rhyme and subway commercial) to your YouTube Channel.
- Put the Title of the Challenge
- Answer the following questions:
- Describe what Foley is in your own words
- How difficult was it to sync the voices and sound effects in the Subway commercial?
- Embed the screenshot of your Subway commercial timeline. This will be a separate assignment grade.
- Embed your YouTube Subway video below the question/answers & Timeline.
***Ignore this part for now***
Nursery Rhyme
Create a folder on your desktop called: #_lastname_nursery-rhymes. You'll save all of your files for it here.
Pick up a copy of the lyrics of the following nursery rhymes - I only printed enough so that not more than 2 of you can do the same one.
- Mary had a Little Lamb
- London Bridge is Falling Down
- The Wheels on the Bus
- Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
Directions:
- You'll find at images that go with each line of your nursery rhyme. Make sure the resolution is larger than 640 x 480 otherwise it will be blurry & pixelated.
- Import the images into Premiere
- Find the image with the lowest resolution (you can do this by right clicking on it and checking properties) and right click on it in the Project Bin > New Sequence from Clip.
- Follow these directions and use the microphone on your headset to record your spoken/sung lyrics. Speak loud and clear - don't worry about background noise for this one.
- Add the remaining graphics to your timeline to match the lines of lyrics.
- You'll create at least 5 "Foley" Sound Effects for your nursery rhyme. You might want to use the Sound Recorder, but you can also use the camera and just delete the video part once you've added it to your timeline.
- When you finish, make sure that your timeline shows all of the clips then use Snip & Sketch to create a screenshot of your timeline only.
- Export your sequence as H264, Youtube 720p 29.97 #_lastname_name of your nursery rhyme.mp4
- Upload to your Youtube and embed in your ePortfolio.
